Just bought a sailing yacht? Five questions before you do anything else

4 minute read

Buying the boat is the exciting part. The weeks afterwards tend to be a blur of marinas, paperwork, advice from strangers and a growing list of things you did not know you needed. Before you spend money or set a date, these five questions are worth sitting down with.

Where is she, and where should she live?

Some boats are bought where they are meant to stay. Many are not. If she needs to move, decide early whether you will sail her yourself, bring someone with you to learn, or have her delivered. Each choice changes the timing, the preparation and the cost.

What condition is she really in?

A walk around the boat with someone experienced is worth more than any amount of reading. The aim is a calm list: what works, what needs attention before she goes anywhere, and what can wait a season.

What do you want to do with her?

Weekends on a sheltered bay, long coastal trips and ocean passages are three different boats in practice, even if the hull is the same. Be honest about which one you are aiming for. The preparation, the gear and the learning all follow from it.

What do you not know yet?

Every new owner has gaps: the engine, the electrics, the rig, the weather. That is normal. The useful move is to name the gaps and learn them in a sensible order, on your own boat, rather than trying to learn everything at once.

Who is on your side?

Ownership gets easier when one experienced person knows your boat and your plans, and can coordinate the right trades when something bigger comes up. If you do not have that person yet, that is the first thing to fix.

If you cannot answer all five yet, you are in exactly the right place. Write down what you do know and talk it through with someone who has done it before.
